5 Easy Tips To Nail Your First Day Of Work
So you nailed the interview and the hardest part is over, but now your first day at your new job is coming up fast! Here at RoCoco, we are always hiring and expanding our team, so we know how tough it can be to adjust to a new job! Here’s our list of tips on how to successfully settle into a new job, office, or schedule.
1. Get up early!
When you're starting a new job, showing up late on your first day makes a terrible first impression. Set an early alarm so that you have plenty of time to get ready for the day, eat a good breakfast, and get to work with time to spare. This also leaves room for issues with traffic, navigation, or parking. As an added bonus, you are sure to impress if you are always showing up 10-15 minutes early!
2. Meet everyone you can!
The easiest way to navigate your new surroundings is to get to know your co-workers! This will also help ease your nerves and make you more comfortable in the new space. One fun way you can meet your co-workers is by having treats like candy or donuts on your desk during the first couple of days. This will make people more likely to come over and get to know you! Another way to meet your new peers is to eat lunch in the break room. This gives you a period of time to meet the people around you and get to know everyone. This is also a great option if you are shy because it gives you a little more time to get out of your shell.3. Bring a lunch!
Bringing a lunch to work, especially in the first couple of weeks, will help you adapt to your new schedule and give you a chance to meet the people in your office. By bringing a lunch, you aren’t rushing during your break to find a place nearby to eat, which can be difficult if you don’t know the area very well. This will also help you if you are unsure of the length or time of your lunch break, giving you the flexibility to eat whenever you can.
4. Come prepared!
Make sure that your bag or briefcase is stocked with all of the workplace essentials. Keep plenty of pens and paper on hand and toss a couple of business/contact cards somewhere easy to reach for the initial connections and meetings that you may have. If possible, keep a reusable water bottle in your bag, staying hydrated throughout the day will help you feel and perform your best. You may also want to keep a couple of mints handy just in case you have an after-lunch meeting that you want to feel fresh for!5. Make it your own!
Working at a boring desk or empty cubicle is a creativity killer for lots of people, so bring a couple of items to make it your own! This may be something as small as a framed photo of your friends, or something larger like a desk calendar. Make sure to check with your boss about what the office etiquette is, and always keep your décor appropriate, but don’t be afraid to add a touch of your own personality to your workspace.
From waking up an hour early to keeping your bag fully stocked, these little tips can make big changes in your first few weeks at your new job. Just remember that every employee has been the "new kid" at some point and that everyone is rooting for your success, so just relax and enjoy the new opportunities as they come your way.
