Practicing Mindfulness

If you are on social media, follow the news, or socially interact on a daily basis, you've probably heard of being mindful. Mindfulness is the latest health and happiness trend and rightfully so. What is mindfulness? The oxford dictionary describes it as "a mental state achieved by focusing one's awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one's feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations, used as a therapeutic technique." In this day and age, technology consumes us. It's more important than ever to take a step back and be mindful. Mindfulness will improve not just our health but our overall happiness.

Now, the simple question is, how do we be mindful?

There are several simple exercises to follow to help you gain mindfulness:

1. Practice mindful breathing. Pay attention to each breath in and each breath out. As you focus on your breathing, your mental discourse will stop.

2. Work on your concentration. Don't let outside distractions get in the way, continue focusing on your breathing.

3. Be aware of your body. Realize that your mind and body are one. Feel that you are alive.

4. Release tension in your body. Let your muscles relax and limbs go limp.

5. Take a walk. Once you can be mindful sitting still, you can continue to be mindful as you walk around. Feel your environment and enjoy what is around you.

The more your practice being mindful, the more content you will be. You will experience less anxiety and stress. Start by taking just a couple seconds out of your day to practice mindfulness. Work your way up to minutes and maybe even hours. Your mind and body will thank you.
