How to Act "Like a Boss"

Andy Samberg made us all very familiar with how to act "Like a Boss". If you haven't heard the song, let me give you a quick run-through.

Acting "Like a Boss" includes the following activities:
Talk to corporate
Approve memos
Lead a workshop
Direct workflow
Promote synergy
Eat a bagel
And so on...

Now while the song is meant to be funny, and believe me if you listened to it, you'd laugh too, there are some pretty solid work outputs here. Acting like a boss, however, is more than just being in charge of people and "directing workflow". It is knowing your employees and encouraging the best from them. Some tips as to how to do this, you ask?

1. Build Trust. Your work environment will be much more conducive to positive results if the employees feel a sense of family in their coworkers and boss. Employee engagement will increase as will their desire to stay with the company. Effective communication is another bonus coming from building trust with your employees.

2. Let Your Employees Be Themselves. Integrating personal life with work life makes your employee more comfortable in the workplace. Encourage them to talk about their passions. Trust them to make their own decisions, and support those decisions. They seek your approval above all, so encourage them to take ownership of their work and to feel good when there is a successful outcome.

3. Speak Last. Let your employees come up with ideas first. Facilitate brainstorming and ask your employees what they think the correct course of action is. This lets them know that you value their opinion, even if you don't necessarily follow it.

Many other qualities make a great boss, but these tips get you started on connecting with your employees which ultimately leads a better work performance. Take the time to get to know and understand your employees.
